Yedikule Dungeons

This intriguing structure was built at the behest of Byzantine Emperor Theodosius. Interestingly, it wasn’t constructed initially as dungeons. It served as a place where the emperor hosted his guests.

When the emperor’s son ascended to the throne, he added four observation towers to this unique building. After the conquest of Istanbul, Fatih Sultan Mehmet also built three more observation towers. This way, this grand structure became known as Yedikule, which means “Seven Towers.”

At one point in history, this building was used as a dungeon. There are many legends from that period, but the most well-known one is related to a pagan figure. It’s often told.

According to the legend, a pagan prisoner was held in Yedikule and subjected to torment. As a result of this torment, the pagans cursed the place. This led to the belief that the tortured spirits in Yedikule would one day come back to life. Some even say that Latin voices can be heard from Yedikule on certain nights.

7.
